Community Partnerships: Free Counseling and Support Services

The Center of Adoption Support and Education is a leading provider of adoption competent services. We have partnered
with a number of State, local Child Welfare Agencies, Foundations, and community agencies to provide free services and support to regional families. Please see below to learn
more on the availability of free support services.

 

Freddie Mac Foundation's Wednesday's Child Permanency Project

In partnership with Freddie Mac Foundation , The Center for Adoption Support and Education offers clinical services for any child who has either been placed through the Wednesday's Child Program or who is currently being featured as a Wednesday's Child .

Free clinical services include consultations, individual, family and group counseling. C.A.S.E. offers:

  • supportive pre-placement services to prospective PARENTS who have been identified for adopting a Wednesday's child.
  • parental education emphasizing the impact of grief and loss on attachment and how to promote attachment
  • pre-placement services to the CHILDREN to prepare them for adoption, exploring their grief and loss issues
  • post-placement services to children and families that include assessment and therapeutic support services

Montgomery County Post-Adoption Support

In partnership with the Montgomery County Department of Health and Human Services , The Center for Adoption Support and Education provides free post-adoption counseling support services to adoptive families who adopted their children through that department .


Issues may include:

•  school difficulties,
•  concerns about behavior, and/or self-esteem,
•  symptoms of anxiety and depression,
•  feelings about being adopted
•  separation from birth family, including siblings

Counseling services include individual, family and group therapy and a monthly parent adoption support group with therapists who specialize in adoption.

Adoptive Family Preservation Project

Funded by Virginia Department of Social Services , Managed by United Methodist Family Services , Richmond , VA

In partnership with the United Methodist Family Services and the Virginia Department of Social Services, The Center for Adoption Support and Education provides free post-adoption counseling support services to adoptive families who adopted their children through public department of social services and live in Virginia to receive services. C.A.S.E. provides:

  • Crisis Intervention
  • Kids Groups
  • Case Management
  • Individual, family, and group counseling / therapy
  • Educational workshops and seminars for parents
  • Support and assistance with school issues

Rural Adoptive Family Initiative (RAFI)

The Rural Adoptive Family Initiative
is a partnership of the Virginia Department of Social Services ,
Local Departments of Social Services, Virginia One Church One Child , and PolicyWorks, Ltd .

 

The RAFI project supports efforts to preserve adoption and to facilitate this lifelong process by meeting the varying and sometimes complex needs of children and families affected by adoption.

The RAFI adoption therapist, in association with The Center for Adoption Support and Education, provides several supportive services to families and the community in order to promote the success of this goal. These services include:

  • Provide adoption sensitive mental health services to children and families, to include individual counseling for children and adolescents, family therapy and education
  • Provide training to existing mental health providers in adoption competencies
  • Provide training to school personal to enhance the understanding of adoption and to promote an adoption sensitive school environment
